OUR WHY
Laura Anne’s Bakehouse was founded because of our passion for animal welfare.
Laura was deeply affected and saddened by the war in Ukraine in February 2022, and the damaging and devastating effect that it was having on family’s and their pets, farm animals, and native birds & animals. Wanting to help in any way she could, Laura began raising money for animal rescues and shelters across Ukraine by selling her loaves of bread and bagels. Laura was absolutely overcome by love and support, and managed to raise an incredible amount of $2000! The money went to such deserving individuals and organisations who were putting their own lives at risk by staying behind to rescue, rehabilitate, and give these vulnerable animals a chance at life.
The empathy and selflessness of the wonderful individuals who rescue animals, who dedicate their time, lives and money, who advocate and educate, and who strive to give them a better life really resonates deeply within Laura and she would love to help their cause - with your help, too!
Starting 1st April 2025, we will feature an animal rescue organisation, shelter, or individual each month, along with animals in need of rehoming and/or fostering as well as on our social media pages, with 5% of every New York-style bagel order going towards to these incredible causes. A donation link for each organisation will be included so if you would like to add a separate donation that would be so welcome and appreciated!
In February 2019, Laura’s parents were wanting to add a special dog to their family, and to give their sweet old lady, Bear, then 15 years old, a friend for companionship. With Laura’s help and research, she found the perfect match for her family - Jasmine, a shy-looking dog from Thailand. What we knew from Jasmine’s background was that she was found in a sugar cane field, emaciated and near-death, and looking like she had given birth recently. Her rescuer, an incredibly selfless woman called Soot, took Jasmine to her home and rescue sanctuary and nursed her back to health.
OUR RESCUE Story
Jasmine at Furget-Me-Not Sanctuary in Bangkok, Thailand.
Fast forward to April 2019, Laura and her family met Jasmine for the first time at the airport; it was such a thrilling and exciting moment! Jasmine quickly settled in to her new home and loved having a family of her own. Very sadly, Bear passed away a few months later, leaving a huge hole and emptiness in Laura and her family’s hearts and lives, after being an integral part of the family for nearly 16 years. Having Jasmine and her love helped to soothe the painful loss. Jasmine is happily living in Cobourg, ON with Laura’s parents.

Laura and her partner, Jesse welcomed home a rescue dog in August 2020, an English Cocker Spaniel from Cairo, Egypt. The moment Laura saw Momo’s adoption page, she knew that he was meant to be theirs. Rescuing Momo has been the greatest honour for Laura and Jesse; Momo has enriched their lives with an endless amount of love and joy through his sweet nature, silly antics and in true spaniel fashion, always needing to carry around a toy. Their story is truly the tale of ‘who rescued who’.
